📚 What Do The Digits Mean?
Detailed VIN Structure:
1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
These digits identify the manufacturer, the country of origin, and the vehicle type/division. The first digit is the world region/country of assembly.
4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These five characters describe the vehicle attributes like body style, engine type, platform, model series, and restraint system type.
9: Check Digit
A single digit used to verify the authenticity of the VIN. It's the result of a mathematical calculation based on the other 16 characters, ensuring validity.
10: Model Year
Identifies the year the vehicle was manufactured. The codes alternate between letters and numbers (e.g., A=1980/2010, B=1981/2011, Y=2000/2030, 1=2001/2031, etc.).
11: Plant Code
This character designates the assembly plant where the vehicle was built.
12-17: Vehicle Indicator Section (VIS)
These final six digits are the unique sequential production number assigned by the manufacturer. If a vehicle was built before 1981, this section may contain a mix of numbers and letters, and the VIN might be shorter than 17 digits.
